U2 Leaves The Competition `Behind`

Posted on Monday, November 06 @ 17:46:16 UTC by Macphisto
-----------------------------------------------

(Billboard.com) --U2 raced to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart yesterday (Nov. 5) with "All That You Can`t Leave Behind" (Universal/Island), pocketing an eighth No. 1 on that survey and denying Blur its fifth in the process. Completing a double victory for Ireland that also included Westlife`s leap to the top of the singles chart, U2`s latest success follows the No. 1 status achieved by the album`s lead single, "Beautiful Day," last month. It`s taken U2 17 years to amass those eight No. 1 albums, dating back to March 1983, when "War" spent a week at the summit of the chart.

Blur`s "blur: the best of" (Food/Parlophone/EMI), like the U2 album, shipped platinum in the U.K. (300,000 units), but could only enter at No. 3, with last week`s bestseller, Texas` "The Greatest Hits" (Mercury), in between at No. 2. Also new to the album tally were pop chart regulars Steps, who followed their recent No. 1 single "Stomp" with "Buzz" (Ebul/Jive), which debuted at No. 4.

Below Westlife on the U.K. singles chart, there was a new entry at No. 6 for "Number 1" by Tweenies (BBC Music), the latest children`s television phenomenon, following in the tiny footsteps of 1997 chart sensations Teletubbies. Multi-platinum U.S. rapper Nelly saw his "(Hot Shit) Country Grammar" (Universal) arrive in the U.K. at No. 7, while Christina Aguilera debuted at No. 8 with the recent Hot 100 No. 1 "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" (RCA), and former Xscape member Kandi came in at No. 9 with "Don`t Think I`m Not" (Columbia).

French production team Modjo claimed top spot on Music & Media`s Eurochart Hot 100 Singles survey with "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)" a pan-European club crossover based on a sample from Chic`s "Soup For One." The Spice Girls` "Holler"/"Let Love Lead The Way" (Virgin) came in at No. 2, while the Backstreet Boys` "Shape Of My Heart" (Jive) premiered at No. 3.

On the European Top 100 Albums chart, Limp Bizkit`s reign with "Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Water" (Interscope/Polydor) ended after only one week after Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler`s "Sailing To Philadelphia" (Mercury) completed its climb to the top. Lenny Kravitz`s "Greatest Hits" (Virgin) repeated its performance on The Billboard 200 by debuting on the pan-European chart at No. 2.
