Bono asks Irish government for second Slane concert

(Dotmusic.com) -- Bono has appealed to the Irish government to intervene and allow them to stage a second concert at Slane Castle after all 80,000 tickets for their show in August sold out in 45 minutes.

According to the Irish Times, the singer has contacted the Irish Taoiseach and the Minister for the Environment to appeal to them to step in.

Bono is quoted as saying, "What is a disaster now as far as we are concerned could be turned into just one of the greatest days ever."

Concert promoters MCD were criticised for the way the tickets were distributed but the company's Justin Green said they were fighting a losing battle to satisfy demand. "We could easily have sold 250,000 tickets" he said.

A spokesman for the Minister for the Environment has said that a second concert is a planning matter and the Minister could not intervene.

There were reports of angry scenes on Saturday after fans, some of whom had waited for up to 24 hours outside outlets in Dublin, were upset that they had been beaten to a ticket by people buying over the phone or on the internet.

One person was arrested and police officers were called to Ticketmaster's offices in Grafton Street.

A police spokesman is quoted as saying, "There was a bit of pushing and shoving in the crowd in Dublin."

The all-day event, which also features the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Coldplay, is the climax of the European leg of U2's 'Elevation' world tour.
