U2 awarded lifetime gong

(Belfast Telegraph) -- U2 were celebrating last night after being honoured by the music industry with a lifetime achievement award.
The Irish superstars, who play three sold-out shows in Dublin next weekend, were winners at the Nordoff-Robbins Silver Clef Awards.
"I'm standing here as the lucky member of a great band," said lead singer Bono, urging the nation to support Live 8.
Bob Geldof won the International Award for his work in Africa.
U2 took a break from tour rehearsals for the showbiz bash, now in its 30th year.
The European leg of the Vertigo tour kicked off in Brussels last Friday.
Next week the band will be back on home soil playing at Croke Park on Friday, June 24, Saturday, June 25 and Monday, June 27.
Veteran rockers The Who won the 30th Anniversary Award yesterday and Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins the Classical Award. Other winners including Natasha Bedingfield and McFly.
