U2 were the big winners at this year's Meteor Ireland Music Awards ceremony which was held at Dublin's Point Theatre last night. The group scooped seven gongs including Best Group, Best Video for Elevation, Best Album for All that you can't leave behind and Best Single for Walk On.

Bono won a Best Songwriter award and the Edge won Best Musician. U2's manager Paul McGuinness also won an industry award, bringing the U2 organisation's total tally to eight.

Other winners at the awards sponsored by mobile phone company, Meteor, included Westlife for Best Irish Pop Artist; Ronan Keating for Best Male Pop Singer and Samantha Mumba for Best Irish Female Singer.

In a largely predictable awards ceremony, Paul Brady won a Lifetime Achievement Award and Christy Moore won Best Folk Artist. David Kitt and Kila were the only independent artists to win awards.

In the international section, Welsh band, Stereophonics, won Best Group;Robbie Williams won Best Male Singer; and Dido won Best Female singer.
