U2 Flies High at Gibson Awards

(Reuters) -- HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Irish rockers U2 began what should be an kudos-heavy week for them by walking away Tuesday with three prizes at the Orville H. Gibson Awards, honoring guitarists in various musical genres.
U2, a nominee for eight awards at Wednesday night's Grammys, was named best guitar band, while the Edge took home the Gibson for best rock guitarist and Adam Clayton won for bassist.
The eighth edition of the awards, presented at the Knitting Factory, included lifetime achievement honors to bluegrass banjo player Earl Scruggs and to Scotty Moore, the guitarist behind Elvis Presley and the Sun Studios.
"I like a party as much as the next fellow," blues guitar winner Keb' Mo' said, "but the best part is being in the same room as Earl Scruggs."
Other winners were Acoustic Alchemy (jazz); Gillian Welch (country female); Brad Paisley (country male); India. Arie (acoustic guitar, female); Dave Matthews (acoustic guitar, male); and Pete Yorn (emerging guitarist). Moore led a jam session with the house band on "Heartbreak Hotel" and a few blues numbers following the ceremony, hosted by Mark DeCarlo.
