Bono to lobby for Oxfam at African summit

Posted on Tuesday, January 08 @ 10:57:33 CET by Macphisto
-----------------------------------------------

(AFP) -- U2 lead singer Bono will attend the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit next week in Malawi to lobby regional leaders to use debt relief to fight poverty and AIDS, Oxfam said today.

Bono and Harvard University economist Mr Jeffrey Sachs will meet all the heads of state on Monday in Blantyre and visit Malawi's administrative capital, Lilongwe, the statement said.

The following day, Mr Sachs will present the findings of a World Health Organization report that found increased health spending on the world's poorest people would boost economic development and ease poverty levels.

Bono has used his fame as a singer for the Irish rock group to advocate for debt relief for the world's poorest countries and for improved trade relations between Africa and the rest of the world.

The 14-nation SADC grouping is holding a special summit in Blantyre to discuss on the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the deepening political crisis in Zimbabwe, where presidential elections are due in March.
